Servants of Christ Lutheran Church was founded in 1989 as a mission-minded member congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. From its earliest beginnings, charter members determined that: (1) the congregation would focus on sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in all its activities, (2) Bible study would be a top educational priority, and (3) a significant portion of all incoming monies would go out again in mission and outreach.
Funds for the first unit church building were quickly raised, and the building was constructed hands-on by the members themselves with assistance from the ELCA's "Mission Builders" program. Then in the late 1990's the sanctuary's seating capacity was expanded and an educational unit added, again with members doing much of the construction. Even today, many recall with pleasure the shingles they nailed down and the floor tiles they laid themselves.
The church building has always been used for community as well as church activities. For example, a Pioneer Club for Christian education (ages preschool through 6th grade) meets on Monday evenings. A Boy Scout troop utilizes the church on Thursday evenings, and the Geist Gathering Bible Study for area women meets in the church library on Thursday mornings. Members deliver meals to local homebound people. The church building is a public polling place. The congregation has recently begun a process of strategic planning to determine how best to serve the needs of its members and the wider community.
Worship is the center of our life in Christ. The church offers a traditional Sunday morning service at 9:00 a.m. with a concurrent nursery for babies and toddlers and Children's Church for preschoolers through 4th graders. We enjoy coffee and doughnuts after the morning service, followed by Sunday School classes for all ages. Midweek evening services are offered during Advent, Lent, and other times. The Adult Choir sings most Sundays, the Bell Choir plays monthly, and the Children sing from time to time.
Small groups: A Prayer Group meets on Wednesday evenings. The Men's Breakfast Group convenes on the second Saturday of each month, and the women have occasional evening gatherings. An active Youth Group offers church and community service for teens, and the Senior Servants (folks age 55+) are a strong, powerful force for outreach. A knitting group meets monthly on first Tuesday evenings to create prayer shawls for those who are sick. All-congregation meals are frequently offered by the various church groups to promote fellowship. Church activities are overseen by the Church Council, which meets monthly, and its committees.
Pastoral leaders (some full-time, some interim) have included Prs. Ron Voss, Paul Schumacher, Bonnie Sparks, Mike Malone, Ted Stoneberg, several short-term student interns, and our current pastor, Alan Rider.
Visitors are warmly welcomed. Do join us for worship, fellowship, study, spiritual growth, and service to Jesus Christ, our risen and living Servant-Lord.
